Company Directors: Companies House ID Check

Company Directors: Have You Completed Your Companies House ID Check?

If you are a company director, there is a new Companies House requirement you need to be aware of: identity verification is now mandatory.

The requirement came into force on 18 November 2025 under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act. However, this date was the start of a 12-month transition period, rather than a single deadline for every director. Existing directors must complete their verification by the relevant deadline linked to their company’s next confirmation statement.

Millions have already completed the check

There has been a significant take-up of the new system. Companies House reported that nearly 4 million individuals had verified their identities and linked their appointments by June 2026.

Companies House estimates that around 6–7 million individuals will ultimately need to complete identity verification during the transition period.

That means a substantial number of directors and people with significant control (PSCs) still need to complete the process before their individual deadlines.

What do directors need to do?

You can complete the check online via GOV.UK One Login, with photo ID, or via an ACSP like an accountant. Once verified, you receive a personal Companies House code which is linked to your company appointments.

Don’t leave it until the last minute. If you’re a director or PSC and haven’t completed your verification, check your Companies House record and speak to your accountant if you’re unsure when your deadline falls.

We can help you understand what you need to do and make sure your company remains compliant.
